pdf4u was built out of frustration with existing PDF tools. Most online PDF services hide essential features behind paywalls, require account creation, plaster ads across the interface, or quietly harvest your data. We wanted something better: a set of tools that are genuinely free, fast, private, and easy to use.
Every tool on pdf4u is designed to do one thing well. Upload your file, configure options if needed, and download the result. No accounts, no waiting, no limits. Your files are processed securely on our servers and automatically deleted within one hour — we never store, read, or share your documents.
How It's Built
pdf4u is built with a modern, open-source technology stack. The frontend uses Next.js and React for a fast, responsive user experience. The backend runs on FastAPI (Python) with specialized PDF libraries: pikepdf for document manipulation, PyMuPDF for rendering and conversion, and Pillow for image processing. Ghostscript handles advanced PDF compression.
Files are processed server-side using Celery for async task management, with Redis handling job queuing and status tracking. The entire application is containerized with Docker and served behind Caddy with automatic HTTPS, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3 support.
